Indications

Artane is primarily used to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease such as muscle stiffness, tremors, and poor muscle control. It is also prescribed to manage extrapyramidal symptoms (movement disorders) caused by certain antipsychotic medications.

Mechanism of Action

Trihexyphenidyl works by blocking acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system, helping to restore the balance between acetylcholine and dopamine, which is often disrupted in Parkinson’s disease.

Dosage and Administration

• Typical starting dose: 1 mg two or three times daily, gradually increased based on response.

• Maximum recommended dose is usually 15 mg per day, divided into multiple doses.

• Tablets should be taken with water and can be taken with or without food.

• Follow the prescribing doctor’s instructions closely.

Side Effects

Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, dizziness, and urinary retention.
Less common but serious effects may include confusion, hallucinations, and tachycardia.

Precautions

• Use caution in patients with glaucoma, enlarged prostate, or urinary retention.

• Not recommended in children under 3 years.
