What It Is
Atenolol is a beta blocker. It works by slowing down the heart rate and reducing the workload on the heart. This helps lower blood pressure and prevent chest pain.

Uses

1. High blood pressure

2. Chest pain due to heart disease (angina)

3. Heart attack recovery

4. Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)

5. Sometimes used off-label for anxiety or migraine prevention

Dosage

• Usual starting dose: 50 mg once daily

• Can be increased up to 100 mg daily depending on the condition

• Always follow your doctor’s instructions

Warnings

• Do not stop taking suddenly. It may cause serious heart problems

• Use with caution if you have:

  • Asthma or other breathing problems

  • Diabetes, as it may hide signs of low blood sugar

  • Circulation problems

• Not suitable for people with:

  • Very slow heart rate

  • Heart block

  • Severe heart failure

Common Side Effects

• Tiredness

• Dizziness or lightheadedness

• Slow heartbeat

• Cold hands or feet

• Nausea

• Depression (less common)

Serious Side Effects
Seek medical help if you notice:

• Trouble breathing or wheezing

• Swelling in feet or ankles

• Fainting

• Very slow or irregular heartbeat

• Allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling)

Tips for Use

• Take at the same time each day

• Can be taken with or without food

• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose

• Monitor your blood pressure regularly

• Avoid driving or using machines until you know how the medicine affects you
