What is Atorvastatin 40 mg?

Atorvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering medication from the statin class. It works by blocking an enzyme in the liver that helps produce cholesterol, especially “bad” LDL cholesterol, while increasing “good” HDL cholesterol.

 What is it used for?

• High cholesterol

• Prevention of heart attack or stroke (especially in high-risk individuals)

• Treatment of inherited cholesterol disorders (e.g., familial hypercholesterolemia)

 Dosage and Use

• Usual dose: 10–80 mg once daily. The 40 mg dose is moderate-to-high intensity and is often chosen when significant LDL reduction is needed.

• Administration: Take once daily, with or without food, at the same time each day.

• Missed dose: Skip if it’s close to the next one; don’t double up.

Warnings and Precautions

• Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding

• Caution in liver disease or heavy alcohol use

• May cause muscle problems (e.g., pain, tenderness, weakness)

• Liver enzymes and cholesterol levels should be monitored regularly

Possible Side Effects

Common:

• Headache

• Constipation or diarrhea

• Muscle aches

• Joint pain

Serious (rare):

• Liver damage (unusual fatigue, dark urine, yellowing of skin/eyes)

• Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis)

Monitoring Needed

• Lipid profile (before treatment and during)

• Liver function tests

• Creatine kinase (CK) if muscle pain occurs

Drug Interactions

Avoid or use caution with:

• Grapefruit juice

• Certain antibiotics or antifungals (e.g., clarithromycin, ketoconazole)

• Other cholesterol drugs (e.g., fibrates)

• Some heart medications (e.g., amiodarone)
