Blood Transfusion Set

A blood transfusion set is a specially designed intravenous (IV) set used to deliver whole blood or blood products (such as packed red cells or plasma) from a blood bag into a patient’s circulatory system. It is made from medical-grade, non-toxic PVC and is designed for single use to prevent contamination or infection.

KEY COMPONENTS:

• Piercing spike: Connects securely to the blood bag port

• Drip chamber with blood filter (usually 170 to 200 microns): Allows visual monitoring of flow rate and removes clots or debris

• Flexible tubing: Carries blood from the drip chamber to the patient

• Roller clamp: Controls the flow rate of blood

• Y-injection port (in some models): Allows the introduction of compatible IV fluids or medication

• Luer lock or needle adapter: Connects to the patient’s IV cannula or catheter

• Sterile and pyrogen-free

• Latex-free (in most modern designs)

• Compatible with standard blood bags and IV systems

• Length: Usually about 150 to 180 cm for patient comfort and mobility

• Drip rate: Approximately 20 drops per mL

USES (INDICATIONS):

• Administering whole blood or blood components during surgery, trauma, anemia, or medical conditions requiring transfusion

• Often used in emergency, surgical, and oncology departments

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:

• Check the package integrity and expiry date before opening

• Connect the spike to the blood bag in aseptic conditions

• Fill the drip chamber halfway and adjust flow rate using the roller clamp

• Monitor for air bubbles, blood flow rate, and patient reactions during transfusion

• Dispose of the set immediately after single use following biohazard protocols

PRECAUTIONS:

• For single use only; reuse may lead to infection or cross-contamination

• Do not use if the packaging is damaged or if sterility is compromised

• Ensure compatibility with blood bag ports and patient IV access devices

STORAGE:

• Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight

• Keep in original sealed packaging until use

• Avoid exposure to high temperatures or moisture
