What is Cafergot Tablet?

Cafergot is a prescription medication used to treat acute migraine attacks and cluster headaches. It combines two active ingredients:

• Ergotamine tartrate: A vasoconstrictor that narrows the blood vessels around the brain, helping to relieve migraine pain caused by the dilation of these vessels.

• Caffeine: Enhances the effect of ergotamine and helps speed up its absorption.

It is not used for migraine prevention but for treating an attack once it starts.

How It Works

Migraines are believed to involve the dilation of blood vessels in the brain. Ergotamine counteracts this by narrowing those vessels. Caffeine boosts this action, making the medication more effective and faster acting.

Dosage Guidelines (General)

• At the start of a migraine, adults usually take 2 tablets.

• If needed, 1 tablet can be taken every 30 minutes until relief is felt.

• Maximum dose: No more than 6 tablets per migraine attack or 10 tablets per week.

Who Should Avoid Cafergot?

Cafergot is not recommended for:

• Pregnant or breastfeeding women

• People with heart disease, high blood pressure, or circulation disorders

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include:

• Cold or numb fingers and toes

• Blue or pale skin (especially in extremities)

• Confusion, severe headache, or visual disturbances

• Do not use for chronic daily headaches.

• Do not exceed the recommended dose—it can lead to ergotism, a serious condition marked by reduced blood flow to limbs or organs.
