What is DuoTrav?

DuoTrav is a prescription eye drop used to lower raised pressure in the eyes, particularly in patients with:

  • Open-angle glaucoma

  • Ocular hypertension

It is used when a single medication isn’t enough to control the pressure.

Active Ingredients

Each mL contains:

  • Travoprost 0.004% – a prostaglandin analog

  • Timolol 0.5% – a non-selective beta-blocker

Together, they work by:

  • Travoprost: Increases the outflow of fluid from the eye.

  • Timolol: Decreases the production of fluid inside the eye.

Dosage and Administration

  • One drop in the affected eye once daily, preferably at the same time each day (morning or evening).

  • Do not use more than once daily, as overuse may reduce effectiveness.

  • Remove contact lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

  • If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between each medication.

Who Should Not Use It

Avoid DuoTrav if you:

  • Are allergic to travoprost, timolol, or any of the ingredients.

  • Have a history of asthma or other severe breathing disorders like COPD.

  • Have serious heart problems such as slow heart rate, heart block, or heart failure.

Possible Side Effects

Common eye-related side effects:

  • Redness

  • Itching or burning

  • Blurred vision

  • Eye pain

  • Increased eyelash growth

  • Darkening of the eyelid or iris (may be permanent)

Systemic (whole-body) side effects from timolol:

  • Slow heartbeat

  • Low blood pressure

  • Fatigue or dizziness

  • Shortness of breath (especially in asthma patients)

Precautions

  • Use with caution in diabetics, as timolol may mask signs of low blood sugar.

  • Should not be used during pregnancy unless necessary.

  • Not recommended during breastfeeding unless advised by a doctor.

  • Use with care in elderly patients and those with other medical conditions.

Storage

  • Store below 25°C.

  • Do not freeze.

  • Discard 4 weeks after opening the bottle to avoid contamination.

Benefits

  • Combines two effective agents in one bottle, simplifying treatment.

  • Requires only one daily dose.

  • Shown to effectively lower intraocular pressure by 30–40%.
