Product Name: Lactulose Oral Solution (300 ml)

Type: Osmotic laxative (syrup form)
Prescription Status:  Usually available over the counter, but should be used with medical guidance—especially in children or long-term use.

Active Ingredient:

  • Lactulose 10 g per 15 ml (standard concentration)

  • Also contains: purified water and sometimes flavoring agents

Uses (Indications)

  • Constipation – softens stools and promotes regular bowel movements

  • Hepatic encephalopathy – helps lower blood ammonia levels in patients with liver disease

How It Works

Lactulose is a synthetic sugar that is not absorbed in the intestines.

  • In the colon, it is broken down by gut bacteria into acids that draw water into the bowel.

  • This softens stools and makes them easier to pass.

  • It also helps trap and remove ammonia in patients with liver conditions.

Dosage & Administration

Always follow the dosage provided by your doctor or on the label.

For Constipation

  • Adults:

    • Initial: 15–30 ml once or twice daily

    • Maintenance: 10–25 ml daily

  • Children (2–12 years): 5–15 ml daily

  • Infants: 2.5–5 ml daily

For Hepatic Encephalopathy

  • 30–50 ml, 3 to 4 times daily, adjusted based on response

  • Can be taken with or without food. Mixing with water, juice, or milk can improve taste.

Possible Side Effects

  • Common: bloating, flatulence, stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea (especially with high doses)

  • Less common: electrolyte imbalance (with prolonged use), dehydration

  • Rare: allergic reaction, severe abdominal pain (seek medical help)

Precautions

  • Use with caution in diabetics (contains sugar)

  • Avoid prolonged use without medical advice

  • Not for use in cases of:

    • Intestinal obstruction

    • Galactosemia (genetic sugar intolerance)

Storage Instructions

  • Store at room temperature

  • Do not refrigerate—the syrup may become too thick

  • Keep the bottle tightly closed and away from moisture
