Form: Oral liquid suspension
Strength: Artemether 20 mg + Lumefantrine 120 mg per 5 ml
Prescription Status:  Prescription required

Primary Use:

Treatment of uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in infants and children weighing 5 kg and above.

How It Works:

• Artemether: A fast-acting antimalarial that rapidly kills malaria parasites in the blood.

• Lumefantrine: A longer-acting component that clears remaining parasites and prevents recurrence.

Together, they form an effective artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT).

Dosage & Administration:

• Dosage is based on body weight and administered in 6 doses over 3 days:

Timing:
Day 1: 1st dose at diagnosis, 2nd dose after 8 hours
Day 2 & 3: 1 dose in the morning and 1 in the evening

 Always take with milk or fatty food to improve absorption.

Benefits:

• Highly effective for falciparum malaria

• Suitable for young children who cannot swallow tablets

• Works fast to reduce symptoms and clear infection

Precautions:

• Not for severe malaria or malaria prevention

• Use with caution in children with:

  • Heart rhythm disorders

  • Liver or kidney disease

  • Low potassium or magnesium levels

• May reduce effectiveness of hormonal birth control

• Avoid combining with enzyme-inducing drugs (e.g., carbamazepine, rifampin, or St. John’s Wort)

Possible Side Effects:

Common:

• Headache

• Loss of appetite

• Dizziness

• Nausea or vomiting

Rare but serious:

• Irregular heartbeat

• Severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)

• Yellowing of eyes or skin (jaundice)

Storage Instructions:

• Store at room temperature

• Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture

• Shake well before each use

• Keep out of reach of children
