Product Name: Lumigan

Generic Name: Bimatoprost Ophthalmic Solution
Strength: 0.01% (0.1 mg/mL) or 0.03% depending on the formulation
Form: Sterile eye drop solution
Prescription Status: ✅ Prescription required

Uses

  • Reduces intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with:

    • Open-angle glaucoma

    • Ocular hypertension

  • May also be used cosmetically to enhance eyelash growth (off-label, under supervision)

How It Works

Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analog. It works by increasing the outflow of fluid (aqueous humor) from the eye, thereby lowering pressure inside the eye.

How to Use

  • One drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening

  • Do not apply more than once daily—more frequent use can reduce effectiveness

  • If you wear contact lenses: remove them before use and wait 15 minutes before reinserting

Benefits

  • Effectively lowers eye pressure

  • Helps prevent optic nerve damage and vision loss in glaucoma patients

  • Convenient once-daily dosing

Precautions

  • Not recommended for use in patients with:

    • Active eye infections

    • Macular edema

    • Uveitis

  • Caution in individuals with:

    • Liver or kidney disease

    • Eye lens implants (aphakia or pseudophakia)

  • Should be used under medical supervision during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Possible Side Effects

Common:

  • Redness of the eye

  • Itching or irritation

  • Increased eyelash growth

  • Darkening of the eyelid skin

Less common but serious:

  • Permanent darkening of the iris (especially in people with mixed eye colors)

  • Eye inflammation or swelling

  • Vision changes

Storage Instructions

  • Store at room temperature, away from light and moisture

  • Keep bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children

  • Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination
