Mucolex Junior Syrup

What It Is

Mucolex Junior is an OTC mucolytic syrup for children aged 2 years and above, containing 100 mg carbocisteine per 5 mL liquid.

Uses

• Helps thin and loosen thick mucus in the chest

• Ideal for productive coughs related to bronchitis, asthma, or other respiratory conditions like COPD and bronchiectasis

Dosage Guidelines

• Children 2–5 years: 5 mL twice daily

• Children 6–12 years: 5 mL three times daily

• Can be taken with or without food

How It Works

Carbocisteine breaks down mucus structure, making sputum less sticky and easier to cough up.

Common Side Effects

• Mild tummy upset (nausea, cramps)

• Possible diarrhea, headache, rash

• Rare: allergic reactions, dizziness, palpitations, or GI bleeding in predisposed children

Important Precautions

• Not for under 2 years old

• Avoid if the child has active ulcers or known allergy to ingredient

• Use with caution in asthmatic children—can exacerbate bronchospasm

• Avoid combining with cough suppressants or antitussives

• Keep in a cool, dry place, tightly closed, and out of children’s reach
