What It Is

Mupirocin cream is a topical antibiotic used to treat bacterial skin infections, especially those caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Common Uses

• Impetigo (especially in children)

• Infected cuts, wounds, abrasions

• Furunculosis (boils)

• Secondary skin infections from eczema or dermatitis

• Sometimes used to prevent infection in minor skin injuries

How It Works

Mupirocin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, specifically by binding to isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, which stops bacteria from growing and reproducing.

Dosage & Application

• Apply a small amount to the affected area 2–3 times daily

• May be covered with a light dressing if needed

• Wash hands before and after application

• Use for 5–10 days, or as directed by a healthcare provider

Common Side Effects

• Mild burning, stinging, or itching at the application site

• Dryness or redness

• Rash (rare)

Serious Reactions (Rare)

• Allergic reaction (swelling, itching, difficulty breathing)

• Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms (like fungi) with prolonged use

• Avoid use on large wounds or broken skin for extended periods to minimize risk of systemic absorption

Precautions

• For external use only

• Do not apply in eyes, nose, mouth, or deep puncture wounds

• Avoid prolonged use unless directed

• Not recommended for infants under 2 months without medical advice

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

• Considered safe in pregnancy (Category B)

• Can be used during breastfeeding, but avoid applying on or near the nipple without a doctor’s advice
