Oxybutynin is an anticholinergic medication used to treat overactive bladder (OAB) by relaxing the bladder muscles, reducing urinary urgency, frequency, and incontinence. It may also be used to manage excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).


Main Uses

  • Overactive bladder (urinary urgency, frequency, and urge incontinence)

  • Neurogenic bladder (especially in children and spinal cord injury patients)

  • Hyperhidrosis (off-label use for excessive sweating)


Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: 2.5 mg two to three times daily, may increase gradually based on tolerance

  • Elderly: Start with 2.5 mg twice daily

  • Children (5+ years): 2.5 mg twice daily, adjustable by weight and response

  • Swallow whole with water, with or without food


Onset & Duration

  • Begins working within 1 hour

  • Duration of effect: up to 6–10 hours, depending on individual metabolism


Do Not Use If You Have:

  • Urinary retention

  • Gastric or bowel obstruction

  • Uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma

  • Severe ulcerative colitis

  • Myasthenia gravis

  • Known allergy to oxybutynin


Common Side Effects
