Penicillin Ointment

Penicillin ointment is a topical antibiotic containing penicillin or its derivatives. It is designed to be applied directly to the skin to treat or prevent bacterial infections caused by penicillin-sensitive bacteria.

Uses

• Treatment of minor skin infections such as:

  • Cuts and scrapes

  • Burns

  • Impetigo (a contagious skin infection)

  • Small wounds at risk of bacterial infection

• Prevention of infection in minor injuries.

How It Works

Penicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, which causes bacteria to rupture and die. This helps eliminate the infection and allows the skin to heal.

Dosage & Administration

• Clean the affected area before application.

• Apply a thin layer of ointment to the affected skin 1 to 3 times daily or as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

• Covering with a sterile bandage may be recommended in some cases.

• Continue treatment for the full duration prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to avoid recurrence.

Precautions

• Do not use if you have a known allergy to penicillin or any component of the ointment.

• Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or inside the nose.

• Inform your doctor if you experience signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling).

• Use cautiously if you have a history of skin sensitivity or eczema.

• Not recommended for large areas of damaged skin or deep wounds unless advised by a doctor.

Side Effects

• Local skin irritation (redness, itching, burning)

• Allergic reactions (rare) such as rash or swelling

• Secondary fungal infections with prolonged use (rare)

Important Notes

• Penicillin ointment is prescription-only in many countries.

• It is less commonly used topically nowadays because other antibiotics (like mupirocin or fusidic acid ointments) are more effective and less likely to cause resistance.
