Prescription Status:

Over-the-Counter (OTC) – for adults and children over 15 years

Active Ingredient (per 5 ml):

• Carbocisteine – 250 mg
  (Some formulations may also contain Promethazine 2.5 mg)

Uses:

• Thins and loosens thick mucus in the lungs and airways

• Aids in the treatment of productive coughs

• Commonly used for bronchitis, sinusitis, chronic cough, and respiratory infections

Dosage:

• Adults and teens (15+ years): 15 ml (i.e. three 5 ml spoons), 3 times daily

• Maximum dose: 45 ml per day

• Best taken between meals

How It Works:

Carbocisteine breaks down the bonds in mucus, making it less sticky and easier to cough up. If promethazine is present, it adds antihistamine and cough-relieving benefits.

Common Side Effects:

• Mild stomach upset, nausea, or vomiting

• Rare: rash, dizziness, or drowsiness (especially if promethazine is included)

• In very rare cases: allergic reaction, including swelling or breathing difficulty

Precautions:

• Not suitable for children under 2 years

• Use cautiously in people with:

  • Stomach ulcers

  • Diabetes (contains sugar)

  • Liver or kidney problems

• Avoid in early pregnancy and breastfeeding unless advised by a healthcare provider
