Salicylic acid ointment is a topical keratolytic agent used to treat various skin conditions by softening and removing the outer layer of skin. It helps remove dead skin, unclog pores, and reduce scaling.

Main Uses:

• Warts

• Corns and calluses

• Psoriasis

• Dandruff (in specific scalp ointments)

• Acne (mild cases)

• Seborrheic dermatitis

• Hyperkeratotic skin conditions (thickened skin)

How It Works:

• Salicylic acid breaks down keratin, a protein that causes skin cells to stick together.

• This leads to the shedding of the top layer of skin, making it smoother.

• It also helps open clogged pores and prevents new acne lesions or keratin buildup.

Strengths & Forms:

• Common strengths: 2% to 40%, depending on the condition being treated.

  • Lower strengths (2–5%): for acne and mild scaling

  • Higher strengths (10–40%): for warts, corns, calluses, thick plaques in psoriasis

• Often combined with other ingredients like coal tar, urea, or steroids

How to Use:

1. Clean and dry the affected area.

2. Apply a thin layer of the ointment.

3. Cover with a bandage if advised (especially for corns/warts).

4. Use once or twice daily as prescribed.

5. For thick skin areas (soles, palms), soaking may help before applying.

Side Effects:

• Mild skin irritation or burning
