Uses / Indications

Tegretol CR is used to treat:

• Epilepsy: Controls certain types of seizures (especially partial and generalized tonic-clonic seizures)

• Trigeminal neuralgia: Relieves severe nerve pain in the face

• Bipolar disorder: Helps stabilize mood and prevent manic or depressive episodes

How It Works

Carbamazepine reduces abnormal electrical activity in the brain by inhibiting sodium channel firing.
The CR (controlled release) formulation provides a steady release of the drug over time, allowing for twice-daily dosing and improved symptom control.

Dosage & Administration

• Usual adult dose: 200–400 mg twice daily (depends on condition and patient response)

• Start with a low dose and gradually increase to reduce side effects

• Swallow whole with water — do not crush or chew

• Best taken with food to reduce stomach upset

Side Effects

Common:

• Drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, headache, unsteadiness

Serious (seek medical help):

• Skin rash (can signal severe reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome)

• Blood disorders (e.g., low white blood cell count, anemia)
