Ventolin Inhaler

The Ventolin Inhaler is a bronchodilator that contains salbutamol (albuterol). It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways and opening up the breathing passages, making it easier to breathe.

It’s mainly used to treat or prevent asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other conditions that cause bronchospasm (airway narrowing).

Key Ingredient

• Active ingredient: Salbutamol sulfate (equivalent to 100 micrograms of salbutamol per puff)

Uses

• Relief of asthma symptoms: Wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness

• Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm

• Management of reversible airway obstruction (COPD, bronchitis, emphysema)

• May be used in emergencies during asthma attacks

How to Use

1. Shake the inhaler well before use

2. Breathe out fully, place the mouthpiece between your lips

3. Press down on the canister while breathing in slowly and deeply

4. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly

5. Wait about 30 seconds to 1 minute before a second puff (if prescribed)

Typical dose:

• Adults and children over 4 years: 1–2 puffs as needed, up to 4 times daily

• Maximum daily dose: Do not exceed 8 puffs/day without medical advice

Precautions

• Not a substitute for long-term asthma control medications (e.g., corticosteroids)

• Use with spacer in children for better delivery

• Do not exceed the recommended dose — overuse may lead to heart side effects

Possible Side Effects

Common:

• Tremor (shaking hands)

• Nervousness or anxiety

• Fast heartbeat (palpitations)

• Headache

• Throat irritation or dry mouth

Rare but serious:

• Chest pain

• Severe dizziness

• Allergic reaction (rash, swelling, trouble breathing)

Storage

• Store below 30°C (86°F)

• Do not puncture or expose to fire

• Keep out of reach of children

• Monitor the dose counter if available — replace when empty
