Colodium (Loperamide)2mg

What it is:
Colodium contains loperamide hydrochloride, an antidiarrheal medication used to manage acute, non-infectious diarrhea in adults and children over 9 years old.

How it works:

Loperamide works by slowing the movement of muscles in the intestines. This delay allows more water and electrolytes to be absorbed from the stool, making bowel movements less frequent and firmer.

Uses:

• Treatment of sudden (acute) diarrhea not caused by infections.

• Relief of symptoms like frequent loose stools and urgency.

• Can be used to reduce stool volume in patients with ileostomy.

Dosage and Administration:

• Initial dose: Usually 4 mg (2 capsules).

• Maintenance dose: 2 mg (1 capsule) after each loose stool.

• Maximum dose: Do not exceed 12 mg (6 capsules) per day.

• Use only as long as diarrhea persists, and consult a doctor if symptoms last more than 2 days.

Precautions and Contraindications:

• Do not use:

  • If you have bacterial infections causing diarrhea (e.g., dysentery).

  • If you have inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis.

  • If you have acute abdominal conditions with fever.

• Use cautiously in cases of liver disease or dehydration.

• Not recommended for children under 9 years without medical advice.

Side Effects:

• Common: Dizziness, drowsiness, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain.

• Rare but serious: Allergic reactions, irregular heartbeat, severe abdominal distension.

Important notes:

• Colodium treats symptoms but does not cure the underlying cause of diarrhea.

• Maintaining adequate fluid intake is essential to prevent dehydration.
