Lidocaine Patch 5%

Lidocaine 5% patch is a topical local anesthetic used to relieve localized nerve-related pain. It works by blocking sodium channels in nerve endings, preventing the transmission of pain signals from the affected area to the brain. It is commonly prescribed for conditions like post-herpetic neuralgia (pain after shingles) and may also be used for other localized neuropathic or musculoskeletal pain.

How to Use

• Apply the patch to clean, dry, intact skin over the painful area.
• Do not apply to broken, inflamed, or infected skin.
• Remove the protective backing and press firmly to ensure proper adhesion.
• You may cut the patch to fit the affected area if needed.
• Use up to 3 patches at a time (or as prescribed).
• Leave the patch on for up to 12 hours within a 24-hour period (12 hours on, 12 hours off).
• Wash hands after application and removal.
• Avoid external heat sources (heating pads, hot water bottles) over the patch.

Precautions

1. Avoid use if allergic to lidocaine or other amide-type local anesthetics.
2. Do not exceed the recommended number of patches or duration of use—this may increase systemic absorption and risk of toxicity.
3. Use with caution in patients with liver disease, as lidocaine is metabolized in the liver.
4. Be cautious when using alongside other medications containing local anesthetics.
5. Side effects may include mild skin irritation, redness, or burning sensation at the application site.
6. Serious toxicity (rare) may present as dizziness, confusion, irregular heartbeat, or seizures—seek medical attention immediately if these occur.
7. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be assessed by a healthcare provider.
