What It Is

Montelukast is an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) used to prevent and control symptoms of:

• Asthma

• Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)

• Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction

• Sometimes used off-label for chronic urticaria (hives)

How It Works

Montelukast blocks leukotrienes—chemicals released during allergic and inflammatory reactions—that cause airway swelling, bronchospasm, and mucus production. This helps reduce inflammation in the airways and nasal passages.

Dosage & Administration

• Adults and adolescents (≥15 years): One 10 mg tablet once daily

• Can be taken with or without food, usually in the evening

• Not a rescue medication—not used during asthma attacks

Common Side Effects

• Headache

• Abdominal pain

• Fatigue

• Sore throat

• Dizziness

• Diarrhea

Rare but Serious Side Effects

• Mood or behavior changes: agitation, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts

• Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Churg-Strauss syndrome) in rare cases

• Allergic reactions: rash, facial swelling, difficulty breathing

Warnings & Precautions

• Use with caution in people with a history of mental health disorders

• Inform your doctor if you’re taking phenytoin, phenobarbital, rifampicin, or other enzyme inducers

• Not a substitute for inhaled corticosteroids unless prescribed as such

Use in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

• Generally considered safe in pregnancy (category B)

• Use during breastfeeding should be discussed with a doctor
