Product Overview

Generic Name: Amoxicillin 200 mg plus Clavulanic Acid 28.5 mg per 5 mL as potassium clavulanate. AMOXINATE

Formulation:

Indications

Used to treat infections caused by beta lactamase producing bacteria such as:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections like sinusitis otitis media tonsillitis

  • Lower respiratory tract infections like bronchitis and pneumonia

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

  • Dental infections

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Bone and joint infections


Dosage and Administration

Children from 2 months old and under 40 kilograms:

  • Usual dose is 45 mg of amoxicillin and 6.4 mg of clavulanate per kilogram per day in two divided doses
    Examples

  • A child weighing 12 to 16 kg may take 5 mL twice a day

  • A child weighing 17 to 26 kg may take 10 to 15 mL twice a day depending on severity

Adults:

  • Not commonly used in adults unless tablets cannot be swallowed

How to prepare
1 Add two thirds of the recommended water to the powder
2 Shake well to mix
3 Add the remaining water and shake again
4 Store the suspension in a refrigerator
5 Discard after 7 to 10 days

Tip Take with food to reduce stomach upset and improve absorption


Contraindications and Precautions

Do not use in patients with

  • Allergy to penicillins cephalosporins or beta lactam antibiotics

  • History of liver problems or jaundice caused by amoxicillin clavulanate

Use with caution in

  • Liver disease

  • Kidney problems

  • Long term therapy requiring liver function monitoring
