Form: Sterile, non-pyrogenic water
Category: Pharmaceutical solvent

Indications

  • Used as a solvent or diluent for the preparation of parenteral (injectable) solutions, such as reconstituting antibiotics, vitamins, or other injectable medications

  • Not intended for direct intravenous injection unless adequately diluted with a solute to make it isotonic

Composition

  • Contains only sterile, purified water

  • Free from any antimicrobial agents or other added substances

  • Must meet strict pharmacopeia standards (e.g., BP, USP) for purity, sterility, and endotoxin levels

Dosage & Administration

  • Volume depends on the specific medication being prepared

  • Route of administration (IM, IV, SC, etc.) is determined by the medication it is mixed with

  • For single use only; any unused portion should be discarded

Precautions

  • Do not inject directly without solute—pure water can cause hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) if given IV

  • Use aseptic technique to avoid contamination

  • Do not use if the solution is cloudy or contains particles

Storage

  • Store at 15–30°C

  • Protect from freezing and contamination

  • Use immediately after opening

Advice to Healthcare Professionals

  • Always check compatibility with the drug being reconstituted

  • Label prepared solutions clearly with drug name, concentration, and expiration time

  • Use WFI from sealed ampoules or vials to maintain sterility
